The virtual Mount Pearl City Council meeting last night turned noisy—not because of disagreements among councilors or picketing outside City Hall, but because of a demonstration outside the residence of one of the councillors.
Mayor Dave Aker blames striking municipal workers, who have been off the job for nine weeks.
Isabelle Fry was set to begin reading a proclamation but was drowned out by a protest outside her house. Mayor Aker was not amused.
The mayor calls it disrespectful on the part of the union to be out there with a microphone blaring.
The two sides are very close to a deal but the union, CUPE, disagrees with disciplinary action against its members, saying discipline should be applied only for things that happen at the workplace—not on the picket line.
VOCM News has reached out to CUPE for comment.
