A rainfall warning is in effect for the Avalon Peninsula as Hurricane Earl makes its way to the province.
Heavy rainfall totaling 50-80 mm, along with wind gusts of up to 110 km/h are expected for this afternoon or evening.
Environment Canada warns that flooding can be an issue as water begins to pool, and all lightweight patio furniture should be secured.
Meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, Mike Vandenberg, says Hurricane Earl will be staying well south of the island and staying out to sea.
He calls Earl “unusual”, in that once it moves out over the Grand Banks, it will sit there for the next 48 to 72 hours, bringing adverse weather to the eastern half of the island until Monday.
