People across the province who suddenly find themselves in a difficult situation because of a cancer diagnosis have gotten a boost.
Newfoundland Power’s Power of Life program has donated $15,000 to the Cancer Care Foundation on this, the 20th anniversary of the charitable effort.
Paige London, vice-president of the utility, says the money was raised through the generosity of their employees, retirees and customers. Power of Life has raised $5 million for cancer patients over that 20 years, and the $15,000 donation will cover the requests for assistance from cancer patients across the province for the entire month of September.
She says her favourite component of the project is the children’s toy box which helps put a smile on the faces of the children as they begin a scary journey.
Lynette Hillier of the Cancer Care Foundation says last year, over 400 cancer patients from communities across the province received financial support including George from Gander. He and his wife are over 80 and on a fixed income.
He and his wife travelled to St. John’s for 39 treatments so they submitted a request for funding through the foundation’s support program. They’re thankful that it was accepted.
