A team from Western University in London, Ontario has just completed field research in Newfoundland focused on mushrooms.
Biology Professor Greg Thorn led a team of researchers and Master’s students on a trip to the island, visiting the Gander Bay and Lumsden areas this summer.
Thorn says Newfoundland and Labrador has lots of mushrooms and plenty of forests where mushrooms grow, as well as a growing community of enthusiasts.
He says he’s gotten to know members of Foray NL who venture out each fall looking for mushrooms, which are identified by experts. He says over the years almost 1,500 different species of mushrooms have been collected and identified.
Thorn says mushrooms are a sure sign of a healthy ecosystem and he’ll be back in the fall to join Foray NL on their annual mushroom hunt.
