The official day of mourning in Newfoundland and Labrador today is a mixed bag of closures and business-as-usual.
All schools and federal and provincial government offices are closed for the day, but the decision to close is being left up to individual municipalities and private businesses.
In the capital city, all offices and city services are open as usual, with the regular weekly council meeting going ahead this afternoon. Many other municipalities however, have chosen to close for today.
In Corner Brook, city hall will be closed as will the Civic Centre’s main office, but other services including garbage pickup and city transit will continue uninterrupted. Corner Brook’s regular council meeting scheduled for tonight will go ahead tomorrow instead.
Town offices and all facilities will be open in CBS where the Royal Canadian Legion will hold a wreath-laying ceremony to mark the Queen’s passing at 10:45 at the Monument of Honour. The Royal Canadian Legion in Mount Pearl will hold a similar ceremony this morning at 11:00 at St. David’s Park.
All town facilities in Paradise, Carbonear, Grand Falls Windsor and Portugal Cove-St. Philips will be closed for the day.
Health services meanwhile are proceeding as usual with only a few cancelled appointments.
