An Irish MP is in the province promoting unity between Northern and Southern Ireland.
Michelle Gildernew is an MP with the Sinn Fein political party in Northern Ireland.
She was in the capital city yesterday to speak to the Irish Benevolent Society about promoting unity between the north and south.
The country has been divided for over 100 years, and Gildernew says they want to create a “new Ireland,” with all 32 counties in the country unified under one state.
Gildernew says things are tough politically right now, and they are also going through the process of Brexit, which would result in Northern Ireland being out of the European Union while Southern Ireland would still be in.
She says the division has caused social and economic issues, as well as “decades of conflict” in the north.
Gildernew states that it would mean everything to her to see the country unified noting that “a divided Ireland cannot achieve its full potential.” She grew up on the border between the north and the south and has seen the unrest firsthand, recalling that a member of her Gaelic Athletic Association was shot dead on the border a few decades ago.
