A ceremony is being held in Turkey today to mark the official dedication of the Gallipoli Newfoundland Memorial.
The memorial is the last in the Trail of the Caribou series of monuments across Europe and Turkey marking major battlefields where members of the Newfoundland Regiment made the supreme sacrifice during WWI.
Today’s ceremony is being attended by a delegation from this province including Premier Andrew Furey, federal Veteran’s Affairs Minister Lawrence MacAulay, and a variety of parliamentarians and representatives of the provincial government.
A tour of other commemorative sites on the Gallipoli Peninsula will also take place to pay tribute to the Newfoundlanders and Allied and Turkish soldiers who served in WWI.
