“We’ve got a total war zone out there.”
That’s the latest update from Port aux Basques Mayor Brian Button following the devastation brought by post tropical storm Fiona.
Emergency shelters were set up at the Lion’s Club, Salvation Army and the Bruce II Arena, but some of those displaced by storm damage were moved to St. James Regional High school to make them more comfortable.
Residents evacuated Saturday are not allowed back into affected areas, and Button urged those who had gone back to their homes to reconsider that decision for their own safety.
He says there is destruction everywhere and unless officials have indicated that it is safe to return, residents were being redirected to the high school.
More storm surges are expected for the time being and the State of Emergency remains in place until the storm settles down. Power will remain off in the main “danger zones” where poles and wires are down and where homes have shifted or were destroyed.
Concrete barriers have been set up blocking people from entering danger zones, which Button says “are there for a reason.”
For those still in their homes, a full boil water order is in place. In areas where the water is off, the water will remain off for the time being.
