Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says federal crews are on standby to provide emergency support as Hurricane Fiona takes aim at Atlantic Canada.
Fiona, a powerful post-tropical storm, will bring hurricane-force conditions to the south and west coasts of the province.
The effects of Fiona will begin to ramp up this morning, with the hardest hit area being the southwest coast of the island. There, rainfall amounts will be up to around 100 mm and the wind gusts will exceed 100 km/h. That will be amplified in the Wreckhouse, however, where gusts will be a dangerous 170 km/h.
In that area, as well as along the south coast of the island, a significant storm surge is expected with the system.
Moving up the west coast to the Corner Brook and Humber-Bay of Islands areas, the impacts are expected to be less severe. Rain and storm surge conditions are not expected to be as much of a factor, though the winds will still be strong.
