The Town of Port aux Basques is allowing more residents to visit their homes in areas that were previously closed off.
Those who live on Water Street East and Feltham Avenue can be escorted to their homes by Ground Search and Rescue and Canadian Rangers personnel until 7:00 p.m. this evening. Residents are also allowed to go back to the Knox Avenue area.
Mayor Brian Button is hoping that Clement Crescent will be open soon, however light and power, construction, and emergency crews are still on the scene, making it too dangerous to access.
Mayor Button says one of the biggest things residents can do is register with the Red Cross to receive financial aid.
He says if you have been affected by the storm in any way, you need to register by calling 1-800-863-6582.
In addition, Button says the donation centers are beginning to reach capacity, so he is encouraging financial donations rather than items.
A means to donate financially has been established with money being accepted through the Atlantic Edge Credit Union and the Canadian Red Cross.
He notes that funds donated to the Red Cross are matched by government, and the Credit Union has set up a dedicated account for the relief effort.
