The town clerk in Rose Blanche – Harbour le Cou admits, it’s hard to stay positive when you see the extent of the damage done by Hurricane Fiona.
Tammy Farrell says the bulk of the damage done in her community was to coastal infrastructure like fishing sheds, stages and wharves, but the emotional impact has been profound.
The first call she took coming into work on Monday was from an elderly woman in the town who told her how frightened she was. It wasn’t until then that she realized the impact the storm had had on residents. “I was petrified,” says Farrell, “but hearing my community members…telling me how scared they were, I just started to cry. That’s all I’ve done, is cry.”
Farrell has been kept busy trying to arrange cleanups of the harbour and keeping residents informed. All the while, she’s had her own family on her mind.
She has immediate family in Port aux Basques who lost their homes and she has them on her mind all day long, and the residents of her community on her mind all day long.
