The provincial government is expressing its support for protests currently taking place in Iran.
The Iranian government has cracked down violently on anti-government protests in more than 80 cities across the country, resulting in dozens of deaths and hundreds of arrests. The UN has expressed concern about the country’s violent response to the demonstrations.
Protests against the country’s “morality” police and laws forcing women to cover their hair and wear a hijab began following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who died in police custody after she was arrested for allegedly violating the country’s strict law requiring women to cover their head with a headscarf or hijab.
The Islamic Republic was formed in Iran in 1979 following the Islamic Revolution and the deposition of the former Shah.
The provincial government says it recognizes the value of human rights and freedoms and condemns violence of any kind against women, girls and gender-diverse people.
