A man who was a link to royalty and played a pivotal role in several aspects of the development of the metro region has passed away.

John Perlin, who was the designated host to the Queen when she visited Newfoundland and Labrador, has died.

Perlin rose to prominence in many circles in the province, being recently installed as Honourary Life President of the Royal St. John’s Regatta. Only two others—Jack Reardigan and Gerry Angel—have been designated such.

At the time, Perlin said he was “deeply honoured” to be elected as the Honourary Life President.

“I joined the Committee in the mid-1950s and served in most of its offices during my nearly 70 years of association with it. I very much appreciate this unique distinction that the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee has bestowed on me.”

He played an integral role in the development of the Fluvarium and walking trails in St. John’s as the Founding Chair of the Quidi Vidi Rennie River Development Foundation.

Despite his advanced age, Perlin was a regular at the Aquarena in St. John’s for a swim, and even attended this year’s Regatta, going for a spin on the VIP Boat with others.

Funeral arrangements for John Perlin have yet to be announced.
