A man caught in the Come By Chance refinery flash fire has passed away.
Glenn Nolan, the president of the United Steelworkers union in the area, confirmed on social media that Shawn Peddle passed away last night after being hospitalized due to the September 2 workplace incident.
Nolan, in his post on Facebook, says the union is calling on the RCMP to investigate the incident under Westray Law, Bill C-45 provisions, as they believe the death was preventable.
Braya, the company that is converting the old refinery into a producer of renewable fuels, confirms that one man injured in the workplace incident on September 2 succumbed to his injuries.
They say the man was a well-known labourer and an integral part of the team, however, out of respect for the family they did not confirm his identity. They send their thoughts to his loved ones and say they are continuing to provide trauma counselling.
As the matter is under investigation, they will not comment further.
