No employees at the Come By Chance refinery refused to go back to work when the facility reopened following a flash fire which resulted in the death of one of their colleagues.
Eight people were rushed to hospital on September 2, with one person still in. Shawn Peddle passed away Saturday night after spending six weeks in hospital.
Glenn Nolan, President of the Steelworkers Union Local 9316, says it has been a very difficult time for Peddle’s wife and children, and the union’s thoughts are with them.
The provincial government says there were no outstanding work orders against the company, Braya, at the time of the incident.
Nolan encourages workers to speak out if they have any concerns. He says all accidents are preventable including the one in question, which is why they wish to see an RCMP investigation.
