St. John’s first so-called pump track has officially opened at the northeast end of Quidi Vidi Lake.
The outdoor site resembles a skate park, but with a series of paved humps, hills and hairpins.
The goal is to get around the course—on a bike, skateboard, scooter or even a wheelchair—using your body to propel or pump forward.

Councillor Sandy Hickman, the city’s lead on public works, admits council had a bit to learn through the process of approval.
Hickman claims Mayor Danny Breen first thought the pump track was a water and sewer project, adding the closest he’s seen is the Velodrome in Montreal but “this was the Velodrome on wheels, literally.”
The project was first announced last year in partnership with the Avalon Mountain Bike Association.
The city provided the land and almost $200,000, while the association raised $125,000, including a $100,000 donation from Canary Cycles. The province also chipped in with a $15,000 grant.
The grand opening with demonstrations is set for 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
