Two people accused of a cross-island spree of thefts of pricey perfume and cologne appeared in a Gander courtroom this morning.
The pair, believed to be from Romania, were arrested on a Marine Atlantic ferry earlier this week as it was about to depart for Nova Scotia.
They’re alleged to have stolen almost $10,000 worth of expensive fragrances from Shoppers Drug Mart and other stores in St. John’s, Paradise, C.B.S., Gander and Corner Brook.
But it was their stop in Stephenville that led to their arrests on the ferry at Port aux Basques, after police were given a description of the vehicle they were driving, as well as video surveillance of the couple.
They were returned to Gander and appeared in person this morning before Judge Mark Linehan.
A local lawyer has been assigned to help work out a plan that could see them released on bail as the case makes its way through the courts.
In the meantime, they will remain in custody until the matter is called again next Wednesday.
