The Town of Paradise is warning people against getting inside storm sewers and other confined spaces following reports of a man inside a storm drain in the town.
Video being shared widely on social media shows a man inside a storm sewer with the grate in place over his head and a fire lit.
A curious resident approached the man asking what he was doing. The man inside claimed that he had been down in the drain on Halloween, popping out to scare people but decided to come back.
“It was kind of a cool spot so I decided to come back and chill out,” the man told the resident who remarked on the smoke coming out of the drain.
Paradise says the incident is the first of its kind for the town. Staff were notified first on Halloween and then again the next day. Visits to the area showed the man was no longer there. The RNC are aware of the situation.
Mayor Dan Bobbett is warning people against getting inside confined spaces because of the dangers it presents.
He says when staff have to enter a storm sewer, they are trained and have full PPE on. He says removing storm grates is dangerous for both the person and the travelling public.
