Constable Douglas Snelgrove’s appeal will be heard this morning following his conviction for sexual assault last year.
Snelgrove was found guilty in May of last year after a third trial. The first two were nullified due to errors made by the trial judges.
Today’s appeal, to be argued by Snelgrove’s new Toronto lawyer, again claims the trial judge made mistakes involving the jury.
It also states the four-year sentence was “harsh and unfit,” and seeks reduced jail time or a fourth trial.
The province’s top court could uphold Snelgrove’s conviction and sentence, or decide to change it.
The panel of three judges could also order a new trial, or the appeal could go the final step to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Snelgrove was granted bail last December while awaiting the appeal hearing and outcome.
He was found guilty of driving a woman home from downtown, while he was in uniform and on duty, and sexually assaulting the woman in her apartment.
Since then, at least a dozen women have accused numerous RNC officers, some retired, of sexual assault, harassment or misconduct.
