Hundreds of young hockey players from Mount Pearl spent this past weekend off the ice and into the community to raise money for local food banks.
The #HockeyWithHeart campaign hosted by Mount Pearl Blades Minor Hockey raised over $13,000 dollars on Saturday for food banks in Mount Pearl.
Young athletes, coaches, team staff and volunteers spent the day raising money throughout the metro area.
The Blades received donations from many, including the St. John’s Regional Fire Department and the RNC.
John Bennett, treasurer with Mount Pearl Minor Hockey, says it’s important to involve youth in fundraising efforts such as the #HockeyWithHeart campaign.
He says it’s especially important for the younger players from groups such as 7-under to have some awareness about issues in their community and understand what they can do to help out.
Funds will be distributed to three food banks in Mount Pearl before the holiday season. Those who wish to donate can do so by contacting the Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association.
