The province’s Justice Minister says his office is reviewing a report of allegations of “gross mismanagement” regarding confidentiality and disclosure of information against the citizens’ representative.
The report was officially received by government on Monday.
Minister John Hogan says he hasn’t seen the report yet, and wouldn’t get into the specifics of what the allegations are, who made the complaint, and whether or not it is related to reports from earlier this year regarding commissioner for legislative standards and chief electoral officer Bruce Chaulk.
Hogan says the review of the report will be done “as soon as possible,” and the department will look at potentially releasing it when all is said and done.
He says some personal information may have to be redacted, but they will release what they can. As well, he says the report is with cabinet and the management commission.
Meanwhile, independent MHA Paul Lane, who first brought to light the allegations of bullying and harassment at Elections NL, sees a direct link between the new report and previous investigations into that department.
Lane points to an investigation over the summer that he was a part of, during which he was questioned on how he knew about the Elections NL report before it was released.
Lane maintains that he has been clear about how he knew, and calls it “offensive” that he was even questioned on it. He says it is also offensive that a complaint has been leveled against the citizens’ rep “for doing his job.”
Lane alleges that the complaint is bullying, harassment, and intimidation against the citizens’ rep, which he calls “despicable.”
