The call has been made for a greater number of dedicated search and rescue resources in Labrador, but the federal minister responsible appears non-committal as to whether or not fast rescue craft or other search and rescue capacity will be established in Labrador.
Jeannette Russell, the mother of Marc Russell who was lost on a fishing trip last year along with crewmate Joey Jenkins, made an emotional plea for greater search and rescue capacity in Labrador last week.
Minister Joyce Murray who is in St. John’s attending a Seal Summit, spoke on VOCM Open line with Paddy Daly this morning.
The nearest search and rescue vessel serving Labrador is located in St. Anthony.
Murray says the department is continually assessing resources and where they are best needed, but was unable to say if government will apply more resources to Labrador.
She says an extended period elapsed during which Canadian Coast Guard vessels were not replaced or modernized and they’re trying to increase that capacity.
