One of two men charged with stabbing a homeowner during two violent home invasions in late September has been released on bail.
32-year-old Jonathan Hurley, who famously greeted the court with two middle fingers after his arrest, slapped his hands in satisfaction upon hearing Judge Bruce Short’s decision in provincial court yesterday.
Evidence at a bail hearing, including the judge’s reasons, is banned from publication.
Hurley and 32-year-old Justin Haynes are accused of two random home invasions on the night of September 12. They occurred in St. John’s on Beaumont Street in the centre city where the homeowner was stabbed, and Maunder’s Lane in the east end, where an elderly couple was roughed up.
The stabbing victim, Jon Wells, was left in serious condition but continues to recover.
Haynes remains in custody with a court date on November 29.
Hurley, who is on strict house arrest, is due back in court on December 19.
Both face charges of aggravated assault, home invasion, break and enter, assault with a weapon and robbery.
