Pneumonia is the single biggest infectious killer of adults and children across the globe.
In 2019, pneumonia claimed the lives of 2.5 million people, including 672,000 children. According to Stop Pneumonia, in 2021, the estimated burden of deaths from respiratory infections, including COVID-19, is 6 million.
Those at greatest risk are the very young and the very old, with the populations most dangerously exposed living in low and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
