The minister of immigration disagrees with a contention by an economist in a Canadian Press article that Newfoundland and Labrador’s efforts to attract nurses from nursing schools in India amount to “poaching.”
Dr. Tony Fang of Memorial University is quoted in the article as saying that we have to do more homework to make sure that setting up a recruitment desk in the populous city of Bengaluru works for immigrants and their families. Fang said the plan raises questions about “poaching” critical skilled workers from developing countries.
Minister Gerry Byrne told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that Newfoundland and Labrador is “recruiting,” as the offering is voluntary.
“He leaves the impression that we are taking them against their will and exposing them to a fraud,” says Byrne.
