The NDP MHA for Torngat Mountains says a road link to northern Labrador is “badly needed,” but she is trying not to get her hopes up.
The federal and provincial governments are jointly funding a feasibility study to look into the potential for a road connecting northern communities, such as Nain, to the Trans-Labrador Highway.
Lela Evans notes that money has been allocated across several budgets for a study on such a highway over the years but it has never come to fruition.
Even with the pre-feasibility study in place, she says it could be another 20 years before the road is actually built.
Evans wants to see a commitment from government that residents of the north coast will see their ability to travel and transport goods improve. As well, she wants to see timelines.
Evans says at the end of the day they have to move forward and the north coast needs to join the rest of the province in terms of access to goods and services.
