Marine Atlantic is announcing that it has awarded a contract for the construction of a new administration building in Port aux Basques.

Olympic Construction and its teams will begin site work starting this week.

Marine Atlantic says the multi-year project is designed to address space and infrastructure challenges and consolidate administrative functions spread out among several buildings in town.

The Crown corporation says the building will include tilt panel construction to make it sturdier and will include weather-resistant materials that will require less maintenance.

Completion is scheduled for the summer of 2024.
