The provincial government has put together a more detailed outline of what’s available to people on the southwest coast regarding housing compensation and replacement following Hurricane Fiona.
The financial framework, announced at a public meeting in Port aux Basques last night, puts replacement value at a minimum of $200 per square foot. That works out to $400,000 for a 2,000 sq. ft. home.
There is also a valuation process for land as much of it along the coastline was invaded by storm surge. Insurance adjusters are still doing their assessments.
Property contents will be covered in accordance with the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program.
Some 85 to 90 homes were either washed away, rendered uninhabitable, or cannot be reasonably repaired.
Anyone in need of housing, financial or other supports must be registered with the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-863-6582.
Individual homeowners, tenants, small-business owners, not-for-profit organizations, municipalities, local service districts and municipalities can avail of federal relief at 1-888-395-5611.
