Some serious questions are being raised about proposals to develop wind energy on the island and the environmental impact of wind turbines on birds and wildlife habitats.
Memorial University seabird biologist and researcher Dr. Bill Montevecchi says of greatest concern is the messaging being sent from government.
Earlier this month the province released a map of huge areas being considered for wind project development.
Environment Minister Bernard Davis has indicated that the areas potentially affecting endangered species and protected land have been reviewed to ensure they will not be affected by wind developments.
Wind turbines have known impacts on bird populations, but the full impact depends on the location and the extent and concentration of the massive turbines.
Montevecchi says there have been suggestions from government indicating that nothing is off the table, and while the minister responsible has “backtracked on that statement somewhat,” Montevecchi wants to see more definitive assurances.
He says the province has a history of giveaways and fast-tracking development and there has been little to no public discussion surrounding what government intends to protect or preserve.
“I just get tired of them giving things away and offering things,” says Montevecchi, a former member of WERAC. “I would like to know from government what they’re prepared to not give away.”
