A new $34-million track and field facility has been formally announced for the City of St. John’s.
First revealed by government on November 2 in the House of Assembly, it will be a key venue for the 2025 Canada Summer Games.
The cost will be split evenly among the three levels of government.
The facility will be built alongside the Aquarena, with a new track complex going right back where the original one had been before it was replaced with parking.
Mayor Danny Breen says the location was a no-brainer.
He says it was determined the Aquarena area made the most sense for now and into the future, noting it will work well with other amenities during the summer games three years from now.
The facility will feature a 400-metre outdoor track with a turf field in the center for sports like soccer and football, and an indoor training space with washrooms, change rooms, office space, and mutli-purpose space.
As for the loss of parking, MUN says it’s exploring options, adding those details have not yet been finalized.
