The NDP says there are lots of questions surrounding the $500 cost-of-living cheques but that it’s nearly impossible to get any answers.
Interim Leader Jim Dinn says people facing domestic abuse are often in situations where their abuser has control over many aspects of their lives. He asked government about that very issue weeks ago but says he has yet to get an answer.
From April to the end of September Iris Kirby House in St. John’s took in 73 women but turned away another 211.
Dinn says it’s another indication that the program was not well thought out.
In addition, the MHA says people calling into the inquiry line receive a voicemail directing them to email. However, people who need to update their mailing address cannot do so by email, only by phone.
It will take about six weeks to get all the cheques out to the 392,000 recipients.
