A new report from the Canadian Centre for Health Information shows that healthcare workers are working more overtime and that a growing number are moving on to self-employment or agency jobs.
The Registered Nurses Union revealed this week that Western Health paid out $300,000 in overtime on one unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in May alone.
The Manager of Health Workforce Information at CIHI, Lynn McNeely, says excessive overtime is a phenomenon seen right across the country since the pandemic.
She says according to Statistics Canada, 2021 saw the highest amount of overtime logged across health occupations in over a decade. She says there remains a slow pace of growth among family physicians but nurse practitioners are seeing the highest growth rates in the country.
