First Light in St. John’s is preparing for some major renovations of their office space, and including that will be a tribute to those who lost their lives in residential schools and the survivors.
The federal government has announced $9.9-million in funding for the organization, the majority of which will go towards the renovation of their offices on Quidi Vidi Road.
On the exterior of the facility will be a Residential School Memorial Garden.

Executive Director Stacey Howse says they have a steering committee that’s been working with Mills and Wright on a design concept.
She says every part of the garden will have significance—such as the materials used. For example, she says they will be using corten steel, which grows stronger as it ages, symbolizing residential school survivors.
