The Canadian Dental Association is applauding the new Canada Dental Benefit which was brought into law last week.

The benefit is an interim measure that will provide financial support for parents and guardians of children under the age of 12 for dental care that is not covered by private dental insurance.

Dentists say poor oral health has an impact on the healthcare system, resulting in hospital visits for dental emergencies and other chronic illnesses.

President Dr. Lynn Tomkins says oral health is an essential component of overall health and visiting the dentist regularly and early in life will get children started on a path to good oral health for a lifetime.
