A series of town halls have been held in the province on the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Keith Cormier says the Mi’kmaq Grand Council was turned down by the federal government to have representation on the Constitutional Consultations back in the 1980s, a move that was considered to be discriminatory.
Cormier says the council subsequently petitioned the UN, launching a 30- year process that culminated in 2007 with the adoption of the UN’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples which contains 46 articles.
The last consultation session takes place today at 2:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus in Stephenville.
Cormier has held meetings in a number of Mi’kmaq communities on the west coast and central to inform people about the declaration.
The meetings are part of efforts to develop an action plan to inform the federal government of what they see as priority actions that need to be taken.
