Residents of Newman’s Cove on the Bonavista Peninsula are frustrated with ongoing water quality issues.
Area MHA Craig Pardy says the community of approximately 80 households has been on a boil water advisory almost consistently since the late 1990s.
Pardy was responding to frustration from area residents who are tired of living under boil water orders.
He says the Local Service District was unable to attract suitable bids for a $250,000 dollar project to address the situation.
Both bids came in well above the amount allotted and the province suggested the community wait until spring to attract more bids.
He says the LSD has been making regular applications every five years for a quarter of a million dollars because that’s all they can afford. He says the $2.2 million dollars needed to address the situation on a more permanent basis will require financial assistance from the provincial government.
Pardy says the government appears to be receptive to the idea.
