Tributes are pouring in for a medical professional who many are crediting with making a significant difference to health care in the province.
Dr. Nazir Ladha, a forensic psychiatrist and lifetime mental health advocate passed away suddenly while on vacation in Egypt last week. He was 80 years old.
Premier Andrew Furey and Health Minister Tom Osborne offered their heartfelt condolences to Ladha’s family. Furey says Dr. Ladha’s contributions to mental health in Newfoundland and Labrador are immense, working tirelessly to bring awareness to the importance of mental health.
Eastern Health says as a psychiatrist for nearly 50 years, Dr. Ladha was “tremendously passionate about his work and advocacy to enhance Mental Health and Addictions services.” The health authority says his passing is “a great loss to not only Eastern Health, but also to the community he served.”
Political analyst, Tim Powers credits Dr. Ladha with where he is today.
“I had the good fortune, he looked after me when I had some struggles,” says Powers, “first-class man, made a huge difference in my life.”
Dr. Ladha’s three sons, Justin, Michael and Jonathan say they are extremely appreciative of all the kind messages and support they have received on their father’s passing. Members of the family are traveling overseas to make arrangements, and the details of a visitation and celebration of life will be announced in the near future.
