The Federation of Labour is going to launch a campaign today to pressure government and businesses to put workers first.
The rally will take place at 11:30 a.m. at Harbourside Park in conjunction with their convention in St. John’s.
President Mary Shortall, who hands over the torch tomorrow, says our health care system is in tatters with front line workers on the verge of collapse.
Shortall says Premier Andrew Furey’s attempts to reset the finances with the Moya Greene economic process were simply an exercise aimed at shortchanging workers. Terms such as “labour shortage” in this province are way off base according to Shortall as the real problem starts with low wages.
She condemned many actions of the Furey Government, such as awarding contracts to friends of the Liberal Party and ordering secret reports on selling off public assets. She calls the current Liberal Government “emboldened, arrogant and dangerous.”
