Musicians who play gigs around George Street are worried these days. They say violence on the street is on the rise to the point where they have taken measures to protect themselves.
Rowan Sherlock says musicians have been physically attacked, instruments have been stolen and money stolen from them. Sherlock, who plays with the band Rugged Shores, says these are not isolated incidents.
It’s not a reflection on the venues because he says it’s happening on the street itself. His wife won’t go to a lot of his shows because she’s worried about the walk to and from the venue.
Sherlock says musicians are taking steps to protect themselves including walking in pairs or groups.
He says it’s not a comfortable position to have both arms full carrying instruments as it makes you a vulnerable and easy target.
