One of the workers at the Come by Chance Refinery is detailing the catastrophic impacts caused by the death of a worker at the site following a flash fire in early September.
Perry Feltham, a worker at the site and the vice president of the Steelworkers Union local 9316, spoke at the Federation of Labour convention in St. John’s about workers who have died on the job.
Due to the ongoing investigation, Feltham couldn’t get into the specifics of what exactly transpired at the refinery on September 2 to cause the incident. However, he was working that day and describes speaking with worker Shawn Peddle as he lay on the ground. That man would later die from his injuries while in hospital.
Feltham has met with Peddle’s wife numerous times since the accident, and says it is hard to sit at one end of the kitchen table where he knows the fallen worker used to sit.
He describes the pain left behind following Peddle’s death for his two young stepsons.
He says those two boys don’t have their stepdad to help guide them through life anymore, and Peddle’s wife will never have her husband at the table for a meal ever again.
