A World War II veteran is being remembered for his love of music and dedication to service.
Charles “Charlie” John Starkes passed away on Friday at the age of 100.
Born in 1922 in Greenspond, Bonavista Bay, Starkes would go on to fight in World War II as a member of the Royal Navy, serving on North Sea convoy duty, and fighting in the Battle of Normandy. He was a 75-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36.
Starkes often displayed his personality through his love of song as a member of the Singing Legionnaires.
While speaking with VOCM News in 2019, Starkes shared why he continued to celebrate Remembrance Day.
He says he remembers all of his friends who died in the war, as well as the soldiers who came before him.
