Today marks the 17th anniversary of the creation of Nunatsiavut and the establishment of self-government for the Inuit of Labrador.
The Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement officially came into effect on December 1, 2005, marking the end of nearly 30 years of land claims negotiations.
President Joannes Lampe says Nunatsiavut continues to make significant strides in addressing the many social and economic needs of Inuit Land Claims Agreement beneficiaries.
Nunatsiavut is also celebrating the recently signed MOU to establish the Nunatsiavut Housing Commission. The NHC can now acquire, construct, develop, maintain, manage and supply housing in Nunatsiavut for Inuit, their households and families.
The new agency is responsible for the housing needs of people who are living with addictions, homelessness, disabilities, and violence and those who are on a fixed income or low income, among others.
