The government has released the feedback it has received during its review of the Animal Health and Protection Act.
The department received 324 submissions online and held three virtual sessions where members of the public and stakeholders spoke with policymakers.
Some gaps identified in the current legislation surrounded the lack of enforcement, penalties they say are too lenient, and confusion over who abuse should be reported to.
Suggestions include higher fines, allowing animal rescue groups to remove animals in distress, and cracking down on backyard breeding and puppy mills.
It’s also suggested that the concept of “abandonment” be defined.
