A surge in admissions to the Janeway due to respiratory illness has resulted in the cancellation of some routine surgeries and appointments at the children’s hospital starting today.
The increase is similar to that seen in other jurisdictions over recent months.
Eastern Health says demand is being met by bringing in extra staff, and using some waiting areas and treatment spaces to support the ER and in-patient units.
The health authority is asking families to consider making an appointment with their GP for non-urgent concerns before proceeding to emergency.
In the meantime, the NL Health Line is also available at 811.
Eastern Health is asking people to keep up to date on their flu and COVID vaccines, to stay home when sick and to exercise other preventative health measures like handwashing and wearing a mask.
