A committee on the Port au Port Peninsula says the proponent behind the green hydrogen project for the region has offered municipalities more money right before Christmas.
World Energy GH2 plans to install dozens of windmills and towers, and build a production plant in Stephenville.
Earlier this fall, members of the Stephenville Town Council came under fire for accepting a ride from Germany onboard the private jet of John Risley, the businessman behind the project.
The company has already promised to foot a $10-million vibrancy fund for the region. Now, Duran Felix, a member of the Environmental Transparency Committee on the Port au Port Peninsula, says World Energy GH2 is offering up $5,000 to be split among the municipalities in the region.
Felix says residents of the Town of Cape St. George have until today to vote on whether to accept the money. His math concludes that it would amount to $357 for his town.
Instead of a simple yes or no answer, he says the town is also asking people to give an opinion on how the money should be spent.
