A man accused of stealing mail in the St. John’s area has been busy racking up dozens of more serious charges in Nova Scotia.
29-year-old Chad Clarke was charged in February of 2021 with breaking into community mailboxes and stealing the envelopes and packages inside. It happened in the waning days of the provincial election which was delayed and conducted by mail-in ballot due to COVID-19.
The thefts occurred at several sites, including Greycliffe Condominiums and postal headquarters on Kenmount Road.
He was released on conditions here, but within a few months, he was arrested in Halifax and charged with almost 100 offences there, including break-ins, fraud, dangerous driving, fleeing from police, as well as dozens of thefts, including more mail, vehicles, credit cards and other property.
He and another man then escaped from prison in Dartmouth. They were on the run for a couple of weeks before being captured and charged with an additional three dozen offences.
This morning, Clarke—who also owes more than $60,000 in driving fines—appeared by video from the Springhill prison in Nova Scotia, pleading guilty to a breach of probation.
The other charges here will be dealt with by speedy disposition when his case is called again on January 3.
