Memorial University has seen a drop in domestic enrollment this year, which is a problem the university’s president says they plan on tackling.
The high rates of inflation seen this year have coupled with some significant tuition increases for students following the end of the tuition freeze earlier this year.
The cost of tuition for newly-enrolled students has skyrocketed from $2,500 last year to $6,000 this year—a near tripling of the cost.
MUN President Vianne Timmons says they need to get out to high schools to ramp up enrollment.
She notes that the university has committed “millions” to scholarships for domestic students, and increased student aid and the emergency fund.
She notes that tuition wasn’t increased for domestic students already enrolled and that tuition at MUN is still the lowest in Atlantic Canada. Timmons’ hope is that there is no student who cannot attend MUN because of financial need.
