The Executive Director of the John Howard Society is echoing a call for greater resources to help manage offenders once they are released from the corrections system.
Cindy Murphy was responding to an Auditor General report into adult corrections and what the AG concludes are out-of-date or non-existent policies, inadequate assessments and serious gaps in rehabilitation and monitoring that has created risk for both offenders and the public.
Murphy says among the top priorities is a greater investment in human resources. She knows that offenders are often not referred to rehabilitation programs, even when they are available, but oftentimes they’re not.
She says there is a lack of communication between departments, and between the releasing institution and the community.
