Bruce Chaulk’s tumultuous six-year term as the province’s Chief Electoral Officer and Commissioner of Legislative Standards has come to an end.
The province has named Travis Wooley as the new acting Chief Electoral Officer and Ann Chafe has been named the acting Commissioner for Legislative Standards.
Both positions are now part of a provincial review of statutory offices.
Chaulk’s term as Chief Electoral Officer and Commissioner of Legislative Standards was an eventful one. 2018, he led an investigation into allegations of harassment against former Liberal MHAs Eddie Joyce and Dale Kirby, issuing reports on both. Both MHAs were exonerated.
In 2021, Chaulk had to manage a provincial election that fell in the midst of a pandemic. He had to navigate a public health emergency and restrictions that shifted the election from in-person to mail-in ballots. Challenges faced at that time led some to question the integrity of the vote.
Then came allegations of harassment in his office, and a probe by the Citizen’s Rep which sat with the Speaker’s office for weeks before it was eventually brought to light. He was temporarily suspended but then reinstated.
