Grocery store chain Sobeys is providing an update on what they’ve termed a “cybersecurity event” that affected services last month—and the cost is in the tens of millions of dollars.
Sobeys’ parent company, Empire Company Limited, provided an update on the event in its fiscal 2023 second-quarter results.
The company says the issues began on November 4. Locally, customers began experiencing issues with prescriptions at pharmacies and with gift cards.
Empire says world class experts were engaged, the source was isolated and measures were taken to prevent further spread, such as the shutdown of some systems out of an abundance of caution, and enhanced security monitoring.
In total, the company estimates that the event will cost about $25 million.
They say the matter is still under investigation and, if they find that applicable information has been taken, they will “take all required steps with privacy regulators and impacted individuals.”
